The women of Gee's Bend became famous when their quilt designs were noticed and admired. 1st graders discussed the "function" of some art and thought about the purpose of artwork. Students listened to poems written about the culture of quilt-making and the traditions that are past down from generation to generation. <br />
<br />
Students created a collage using construction paper. We discussed how to create interesting designs using patterns and elements of art. Students practiced using good craftsmanship by keeping their artwork neat and clean. <br />
<br />
I will display them all together like one big quilt, but here are a few individual examples. <br />

What is graffiti? Can graffiti be a good thing? What makes graffiti frowned upon? How is a mural different from graffiti?<br />

5th graders pondered these questions while discussing the Atlanta mural project called Living Walls. A group of artists came together and created a dozen large murals throughout the city of Atlanta. There was some controversy involved when one of the murals was painted over because the group didn't get the proper permission. Students also learned about an Atlanta favorite, <a href="http://evereman.com/" target="_blank">Evereman</a>, who spreads his art through social media and word of mouth. It was interesting to discuss these issues and compare opinions.<br />
<br />
Students created a graffiti font of their names and displayed them in an urban environment. We discussed atmospheric perspective and value while students painted a distant skyline.<br />

His Cambell's Soup Can prints are among the most recognizable artworks. <br />

3rd graders studied Warhol's life and artwork and created clay soup cans. Students used classic clay hand building techniques including coil and slip and scoring. They then used tools to carve personal soup can details. Students came up with some interesting flavors.<br />

It's common to think of insects when discussing something balanced because insects are so symmetrical. Check out this video of an <a href="http://www.wimp.com/bugphotos/" target="_blank">insect photographer</a> who captures photographs of bugs up close and personal. Students were surprised to see the amount of color and detail.<br />
<br />
We discussed common characteristics of insects, and students designed their own bug using lines, shapes, and colors. In order to create symmetry, students only drew half their bug and then monoprinted the other side. <br />

After cutting out the insects and gluing to a clean paper background, students created a word border by writing about their insect around the outside edge of the paper.</div>

Students discussed the South African culture, Ndebele, who are famous for their brightly painted homes. Students identified patterns, lines, and shapes in the designs.<br />

The Art Scavenger Hunt encourages students to look closer at artworks. What changes as we examine them further? Does your opinion change once you know more about it?<br />

We studied a couple abstract sculptors including Louise Nevelson and Henry Moore. We discussed the characteristics of sculpture, materials used, and the meaning of abstract artwork.<br />

3rd grade students are very familiar with the glass blowing process. Many of them went on a small field trip earlier in the year and saw it happen! We studied Chihuly's life and discussed the look of his artwork.<br />

1st graders learned various clay making vocabulary words like pinch pot, texture, kiln, and glaze. Students created a pumpkin form with textured polka dots like Kusuma. After learning about what an installation is, students also created a paper background with similar dots so that the pumpkin blends in with the installation.<br />

Their excitement for the clay is contagious. No matter what the product ends up looking like, students learn so much by just getting their hands dirty and working with a 3-dimensional sculpture material. We discuss the many steps involved with clay making and students are always intrigued with the kiln.<br />
<br />
Kindergarten students created clay slabs (flat, thin pancakes) and cut a hole out of the center to make a frame. Students experimented by stamping various objects into the clay to create texture. <br />
<br />
Clay can sometimes be difficult and unforgiving. There were a couple broken frames, but I only used this as a lesson in adaptability and process over product. Students will have no problem gluing their creations together after the glaze firing.<br />

After studying Picasso's guitar and violin series, students pondered how music can inspire artwork. <br />

Students became very familiar with clay hand building techniques by making slabs, adding texture, and attaching pieces by slip and scoring. <br />
<br />
It's interesting to discuss the different types of guitars and with which genre of music they're associated. The flying V style was very popular this year. I think my classes were filled with some rock and roll fans!<br />

We discussed positive and negative space and printed with gold ink in the spirit of Klimt's favorite color. <br />

The monks create the designs in silence and while meditating. When they are finished, the mandala is swept up and sent down a river of water to honor the value of impermanence. I love discussing this art form with my students. It's difficult to imagine destroying something so beautiful, but we talk about how the important factor is the process, not the product!<br />

I think it was a great way to get 1st graders thinking about color and what it can do.<br />

Students practiced mixing secondary colors as well as light tints. Students discussed the artwork of abstract artist, Kandinsky, as well as Klimt. Both of these artists are known for their use of color and artwork involving trees. Students compared the artwork of these artists and created their own colorful tree. <br />
<br />
Sometimes it's easy to get stuck in the perspective that students need to memorize information and then be able to repeat the rhetoric. Learning certain vocabulary words is very necessary, but I tried a different approach to color theory this year. <br />
<br />
My first graders understand that color mixing creates new colors. They understand that there are different degrees of color and that combining them in different ways creates a different effect. My students might not always remember exactly which 2 colors create purple or which 2 colors create orange, but I guarantee that they can figure it out by looking at a color wheel.<br />
<br />
Sometimes knowledge is figuring out how to find the answer rather than actually knowing the answer. <br />

5th graders learn a lot during this project. We discussed how the Olympics are an important part of culture and students practiced capturing action poses by drawing gestures. Students also discussed how lines create movement by looking at various OP artists and created a color scheme design in the background. The OP is short for optical illusion. Finally, students created Emphasis by placing their large, contrasting gesture in the middle of the page. </div>
