This month's Facebook bulletin board focuses on Alexander Calder, a modern sculptor known for making mobiles. His artwork is abstract, large scale and focuses on movement and balance. He is one of the participating artists in the Picasso to Warhol exhibit at the High Museum of Art, here in Atlanta.

2nd grade Story Quilts

2nd graders discussed the life and artwork of Harriet Powers, a Georgia artist. Students learned about quilts and symbols. Students created one panel of a collaborative collage quilt using personal symbols to tell a story about themselves.

4th grade Victorian Home Prints

4th graders discussed architectural characteristics and the famous Victorian homes in San Francisco. Students carved a styrofoam plate and printed 2 prints using brayers and ink.

2nd grade Glazed Guitars

Here are a few of the 2nd grade guitars after they have been glazed. Students discussed the neutral colors and chose 2 or 3 colors in order to complete their guitars

5th grade Mandala Prints

5th grade students learned about the Tibetan tradition of making sand mandalas. The Buddhist monks spend hours working on intricate designs in complete meditation. When the design is finished, they wash the mandala down the river in honor of the value of impermanence.

Students created a radial symmetrical print by carving styrofoam and printing four times. Students took the print a step further by reducing the plate and printing a 2nd color. The process was long but the results are beautiful!

Kindergarten paintings

During a 3rd grade field trip to the Picasso to Warhol exhibit, I took a moment to acknowledge Jasper Johns and his number artwork. Thanks Jasper!

Jasper Johns was an American painter associated with the Pop Art movement due to his subject matter that often involved pop culture. He is most famous for his painting of the American flag, but he also did a series of paintings of numbers.

Kindergarten students practiced drawing thier initials and numbers and created a watercolor resist.

3rd grade Tree Prints

3rd graders learned about artist, Gustav Klimt, and his famous "Tree of Life" painting. Students know all about positive and negative space after making their tree collographs. Students used traditional printmaking techniques to create a symmetrical print and then titled their artwork like professional artists.
